Real Madrid breaks silence on participation in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Football club Real Madrid has released an official statement on its website regarding the FIFA Club World Cup to be played next year in June 2025.

There are reports that Real Madrid will not take part in the competition despite winning the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, which would give them an automatic spot. The club’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti, had initially stated that they would not participate in the tournament due to the financial incentive associated with winning the trophy.

What did Carlo Ancelotti say?

“Real Madrid will NOT go to the FIFA World Club, we will decline the invitation like other clubs. A single Real Madrid match is worth €20 million and they want to give us that money for the entire competition. Absolutely not. Negative.”

What did Real Madrid say about the FIFA Club World Cup?

Real Madrid published a statement on its website on Monday, June 10, 2024, confirming that they will participate in the tournament and that they will be proud to participate in it in front of their fans.

“Real Madrid CF would like to announce that at no time has there been any doubt about our participation in the new Club World Cup to be organized by FIFA next season 2024/2025. Our club will therefore participate in this event as planned official competition and we are proud and excited to take part in it and we will once again inspire our millions of fans around the world with a new trophy.”

However, Ancelotti has given permission for his first statement. According to him, everyone quoted him out of context.

“In my interview with Il Giornale, my words about the FIFA Club World Cup were not interpreted in the way I intended. Nothing could be further from my interest than rejecting the opportunity to play a tournament that I think is could be a great opportunity to continue fighting for big titles with Real Madrid.”

The new format of the Club World Cup will see 32 teams take part in the trophy.
