Six newborns killed in baby hospital fire in India – World

NEW DELHI: Six newborn babies have died after a fire destroyed a children’s hospital in the Indian capital, with people rushing into the flames to save the babies, police said on Sunday.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the fire and the deaths “heartbreaking” in a post on social media.

The fire brigade was called late on Saturday evening after flames ripped through the hospital in Delhi.

But in the crucial first minutes, it was bystanders who noticed the fire and braved it to save the newborns.

“All 12 newborn babies were rescued from the hospital with the help of other people,” senior police officer Surendra Choudhary said in a statement, but added that by the time they reached medical help, six were dead.

The fire at the hospital broke out hours after a separate fire at an amusement park in the western state of Gujarat killed 27, including four children.

In that fire – which tore through a center with a bowling alley and other games packed with young people – police warned that many of the bodies were so badly burned it was difficult to identify them.

Fires are common in India due to poor construction practices, overcrowding and non-compliance with safety regulations.

“Legal action is being taken against the owner of the hospital,” Choudhary said.

He would not provide further details about how the children died.

In addition to the six reported deaths, another baby among the 12 brought from the ward was dead before the fire broke out, Choudhary said, without elaborating.

The fire broke out at the New Born Baby Care hospital in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area.

Delhi Fire Brigade director Atul Garg told news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) that 14 fire tenders had been sent to tackle the blaze.

“The fire spread too quickly due to an explosion in an oxygen cylinder,” he said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the situation ‘heartbreaking’.

“We all stand with those who lost their innocent children in this accident,” he said on social media.

“The causes of the incident are being investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared.”

Modi also offered his condolences to those who lost their babies.

“My thoughts are with the families at this incredibly difficult time,” he wrote on social media. “I pray that the injured recover as quickly as possible.”
