Why Julianne Hough’s Kinrgy Workout Class will bring you to tears

In the Connect class, the movements were inspired by the elements of nature: earth, fire, water and air. According to the website, this system stimulates a combination of balance, clarity, connection and self-expression.

The lesson started with the element of fire, where we rubbed our hands together to create friction. As our instructor put it, “Feel the life force energy coming from within.” My eyes glistened as I felt the heat flow between my palms. I drank – not swallowed – the Kool-Aid.

After waking our bodies, we swung our arms back and forth and then did a mix of lunges and dance moves. We then moved to an earth-based movement, where we hit our palms against the floor and brought the energy back into our chest and out.

Once we entered the water phase, we became more in tune with our bodies and created wave-like movements by dangling our arms and rolling our hips and stomach in the same way belly dancers do.

Then came the air part, which, pardon my frankness, sounded more like an orgasm than faint breathing. And here I understood the importance of creating a judgment-free space. Because we all let out loud screams and gasps as we pushed our hands up to the ceiling and worked up to our toes.

At one point the group also gathered in a circle, waving our arms and bouncing our legs, like witches singing around a fire pit.
