Fabrizio Romano says an ‘incredible’ manager is waiting for Chelsea to offer him the job

Fabrizio Romano has shared an update on a manager heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino parted ways with Chelsea last week as the Argentine left by mutual consent.

The decision came as something of a surprise given the strong end to the Blues’ Premier League season. Pochettino finished in sixth place after winning five of his last six games at Chelsea.

However, it proved not to be enough to secure Europa League football as Manchester United’s victory in the FA Cup means Chelsea will play in the Conference League next season.

The Blues are wasting no time when it comes to hiring Pochettino’s successor and appear to have narrowed their search down to four names.

The final shortlist reportedly includes former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca.

And it seems Maresca is waiting for a final decision from Chelsea’s board.

Enzo Maresca awaits Chelsea decision

Romano took to X on Sunday and shared an update on Maresca amid interest from Chelsea.

The Spaniard has already made walks with the Blues and is now waiting for a decision from the club.

The Leicester boss has already rejected an approach from Sevilla as he favors a move to the Premier League.

“Enzo Maresca prefers the Premier League to any other competition, despite Sevilla’s already rejected approaches,” Romano wrote.

“He is waiting for Chelsea’s decision after talks in recent days. The release clause is around €10 million after he is promoted. Leicester City is also waiting for that.”

Maresca’s record compared to other Chelsea candidates

With four names in the race to replace Pochettino, you would expect Chelsea to make a decision just before pre-season.

Maresca is clearly keen on a move to Stamford Bridge after leading Leicester to a Championship title.

After working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, which the Leicester boss praised as ‘incredible’, Maresca has enjoyed an exceptional first full season as manager.

He certainly lacks experience when it comes to other candidates, but he also enjoyed a short stint with Serie A team Parma in 2021.
