Motorists who are distracted while driving using a mobile phone will be fined Dhs800 and 4 traffic fines under the Federal Traffic Law, Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Traffic Department of Dubai Police, told Al Khaleej.

Al Mazrouei said that being busy while driving on the phone poses risks that threaten the lives of innocent people and the driver himself, adding that one of the main causes of fatal accidents reported by the General Traffic Department in recent years have been checked, the inability to give way to other road users, sudden deviation, failure to keep a sufficient distance and speeding, noting that inattention due to the use of a mobile phone can be a common factor in all these cases.

“Using the phone while driving distracts the driver’s attention and increases the risk of accidents by disrupting the ability to react quickly to avoid hazards. “Many drivers do not realize that being busy on the phone and distracted for a few seconds can lead to a fatal accident, killing the driver and other innocent people,” he added.

Road users should obey traffic rules and avoid distractions while driving by using the phone to write text messages or explore social media, Al Mazrouei confirmed.
