Matteo Arnaldi upsets No. 6 Andrey Rublev at French Open

PARIS – Italian Matteo Arnaldi produced a sensational performance to knock out No. 6 seed Andrey Rublev of Russia to reach the last 16 of the French Open on Friday.

The 23-year-old saved a set point in the opening set and then dominated his emotionally charged opponent for a 7-6 (8), 6-2, 6-4 victory, equaling his best Grand Slam run.

Rublev raged and raged against himself as the match began to slip away, banging his racket against his legs and kicking the bench on the court as another chance at a deep Grand Slam run on the Parisian dust came to a bitter end .

Arnaldi, who also reached the fourth round of the US Open last year, was rock solid throughout and barely put a step wrong as he recorded one of the biggest wins of his career.

Rublev has reached ten Grand Slam quarter-finals without ever advancing, but on this occasion even that proved beyond him as he could find no answer to Arnaldi’s accuracy and power.

He is the highest ranked victim in the men’s draft so far.

Arnaldi will face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas or China’s Zhang Zhizhen for a place in the quarter-finals.
