Leitrim-based designer’s magical, bee-inspired garden takes gold at Bloom

Oir-The Zarbee’s Garden by designer Leonie Cornelius.

A magical bee-inspired garden by a North Leitrim designer has been awarded gold at Bord Bia Bloom.

Óir – The Zarbee’s Garden, designed by Leonie Corneliu and sponsored by Zarbee’s, won the gold medal and best in the small garden/balcony garden category.

Óir – The Zarbee’s Garden, a balcony garden measuring just 2 x 5 metres, explores big ideas about wellbeing, how plants can bring both a spark of light and life to the smallest of spaces and how the smallest things can bring the greatest joy.

Óir, derived from the Irish for ‘golden’, is a balcony garden inspired by the power of the wild and the precious liquid gold produced by bees in our gardens and also found in Zarbee products.

The design promotes connection in an often disconnected world and offers space for connection with ourselves, with each other and with nature in an urban context.

The planting plan is inspired by the textures and notes of fragrant herbs and medicines in Mediterranean style, as well as native plants and includes the surprising dandelion.

It feeds on pollinating insects and provides a wide variety of pollinating flowers, as well as a source of tree sap for bees from the adult pine specimen.
