NCDMV announces new driver’s licenses with the intention of combating fraud

The NC Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced this week that it will begin issuing new driver’s licenses, permits and identification cards with the latest card security designs and constructions specifically intended to combat fraud.

The new state ID is a 100% polycarbonate card that is personalized using laser engraving technology. Due to the composition, the card will not only look different, but also feel and sound different. The card has a stiffer feel and has both raised and debossed patterns and lettering on the surface of the card. When it falls on a table top, it makes a unique metallic sound.

The new map design features images familiar to North Carolina residents, with hints of blue and green specifically chosen to correspond with well-known features of the state, such as its rolling hills and abundant wildlife.

The front of the card features the state flower: the dogwood, the state flag, the outline of the state line, a marbled salamander and a lighthouse, all at the forefront of the rolling hills to the west. The back of the card shows the colonial Spanish mustang grazing along one of North Carolina’s many beaches to the east.

These design elements are among more than fifty security features used to help law enforcement deter and detect fraud. The new card design is expected to go into production at the end of this week, as the current design is being phased out at the end of June. Current licenses and ID cards remain valid until their expiration date.
