Highlights from the first day of the state Class AA high school softball tournament

ABERDEEN – Top-seeded and defending state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln spoiled Watertown’s first-ever Class AA game in the state-sanctioned South Dakota High School Softball Tournament on Thursday.

Lincoln (20-0) erupted for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to post a 14-0 win over the Arrows (11-11).

This is the second year that softball has been a sanctioned sport in South Dakota. Watertown did not qualify for state last spring.

“The ending doesn’t fully reflect how we played today,” Watertown head coach Kelli Brinka said. “We might have lost 14-0, but we held Lincoln to two runs and only three hits until the fourth inning.”

Here’s a recap of Thursday’s games:

Sioux Falls Lincoln 14, Watertown 0

Lincoln scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and mixed in eight hits with two walks and two errors in the big uprising in the fourth inning.

Paxton Dekkers, who homered, and Sara Mathison each went 3-for-3 for the Patriots, who also got two singles from Madison Evans. Evans also fired a five-inning no-hitter with one walk and 15 strikeouts.

Lauryn Hirsch reached on a walk for Watertown, which used pitchers Alexa Brown, Kinsley Van Gilder and Brown in the loss.

“Alexa did a great job for us today and we made some great plays down the field,” Brinka said. “Lincoln is so good. They will definitely be hard to beat this weekend.”

Sioux Falls Jefferson 5, Brandon Valley 4

Fourth-seeded Jefferson (16-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to get to 5-1 and survived a three-run rally by Brandon Valley (13-6) in the top of the seventh.

Brooklyn Herrera tripled and scored two runs for Jeffrson. Taylor Duncan added a double.

Alexa Harms, Danielle Schoby and Karlee Small each had two hits for Brandon Valley.

Harrisburg 25, O’Gorman 0

Second-seeded Harrisburg (19-2) rolled to the win thanks to a 21-point outburst in the bottom of the second inning.

State B, A Softball: Florence-Henry and Deuel each suffered first-round losses in the Class B division

Macy Bryant (3-for-4 with two home runs, four runs and four RBIs), Madelyn Ducheneaux (2-for-2 with two home runs and five RBIs), Peyton Bennett (2-for-3) and Maleia Knutson (2- out-for-4 with a grand-slam homer and five RBIs) led Harrisburg’s offense.

Bryant and Ducheneaux each hit solo home runs in the first and three-run, inside-the-park homers in the second.

Mary Koch and Lucy Kappel each doubled for O’Gorman (11-9).

Sioux Falls Washington 8, Rapid City Stevens 7

In the final game of the day, Washington led 7-0 after three innings, but still had the upper hand. After Stevens tied it at 7-7 with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors (16-3) won on a bases-loaded walk by Tierney Schramm with one out in the bottom half of the inning.

Isabel Carda had three singles and Ava Brink two. Schramm drove in three runs and pitcher Emma Hensley fanned nine batters for Washington.

Athlete of the Week Poll: Voting via the poll is possible until Sunday 11:59 PM

Emma Dressler went 4-for-4 for Stevens (13-6). Sayde Hunt and Taylor Kokesh each had two singles and Nieva Colicheski homered.
