Aspiring fencers will have the opportunity to further hone their skills and learn even more of the technicalities of the Olympic sport after the Mandaluyong Fencing Club opened its free fencing sessions on Thursday, May 30, at EDSA Pavillion Mall, Greenfield District.

And with the growing popularity of the sport – thanks to Sam Catantan and Fil-Ivorian Maxine Tiu-Esteban – the Mandaleño Fencing offers an easily accessible program for the city’s youth fencers and hopes to serve other parts of Metro as well. Manila in the near future.

Catantan, 22, was the result of free fencing lessons before establishing herself as one of the country’s top fencers – first at the University of the East. She is now an athletics scholar at Penn State University and competes in the USA NCAA.

The soft opening was graced by coach Ariel Montinola City Councilman Benjie Abalos and Greenfield Development Corporation EVP Atty. Duane Santos, who firmly believes that health and wellness are essential.

The Mandaluyong Fencing Club was established in January last year in collaboration with the city sports department before moving to its new location in Greenfield District.

The lessons officially start on June 8 and are given every weekend.
