A look inside Shakira’s dance-heavy workouts — and how she got her insane abs

Shakira has hips that don’t lie, and a no-nonsense training regimen to get them that way.

“I like to focus on strength and dance individually. If she has a really busy day, sometimes we do cardio on a machine, but mostly we do dance cardio,” Shakira’s trainer, Anna Keizerreveals exclusively in the latest issue of We weekly, while discussing her eponymous Virtual Studios program for $39 per month. “I will be teaching her a series of routines, and she has been using the movements in her performances in her choreography, which is a lot of fun.”

After Shakira, 47, completes Kaiser’s dance-focused moves, they move on to a “strength session.”

“I usually start with the strength session for about 30 to 45 minutes, and then I add about 15 to 30 minutes of cardio post-strength session,” says Kaiser. Us. “Her cardio is lower impact (and) she really likes to engage her brain and learn new ways of moving but keeping the impact low.”

For the strength portion of the workout, Kaiser advises Shakira to do a “combination of heavier weights, such as eight or 10 (pounds), and a burnout.”

“Lighter weight, higher rep,” she says. “It’s more like my sculpting workouts that I do online. Then we have fun, like dancing! The dance is intended to increase and increase the effectiveness of the strength training we just completed, because your muscles should be fatigued at that point.

Shakira juggles her frequent workouts — she trains four days a week at Kaiser — with her music career, other business endeavors and raising her sons. (The singer shares Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, with ex Gerard Pique.)

“She’s so busy with so many different parts of her day (as a mother, philanthropist, business owner, artist (and) producer),” says Kaiser. “There’s so much going on that by the time we get to dancing, it’s taking her stamina and endurance enormously, because of everything she has already achieved that day. It is also a really nice energy lift in the middle of the day, a mood enhancer and a source of strength.”

According to Kaiser, Shakira fits training time in “wherever she can” to fit her schedule.

Getting abs like Shakira is not only due to her workouts, but also her diet.

“(She gets her abs from) mainly eating nutrients (and) eating,” says Kaiser Us. “You want to make sure you have a great combination of protein and carbohydrates after training. Feed your muscles. The more muscle mass you have, lean muscle mass, in your body, the faster the metabolism. For every pound of muscle you gain, you’ve gained an extra 50 calories every day without doing anything. So if you gain 5 kilos of muscle mass, you will burn another 550 calories per day without training.”

The fitness guru continued: “So in order to do that, you have to eat and your muscles have to have something to work with. The most important time is right after your workout so they have the fuel to recover and repair themselves and that is good quality protein and nutrient-rich carbohydrates.

Shakira typically eats an omelet and vegetables for breakfast, a salad with egg whites for lunch, and then a “small dinner” with egg whites and steamed vegetables.

“She also has a crazy sweet tooth,” Kaiser adds, revealing that Shakira used to have a “candy drawer” of candy, chocolate and Nutella in her house. “I used to have to keep a close eye on her. She is doing much better now.”

Kaiser, who also attributed Shakira’s deadly body to “enough sleep,” further noted that she is no longer militant about the musician’s indulgence.

“We’re not being specific about it anymore because she really understands that it doesn’t make her feel good,” Kaiser says. “You start to become more attuned to your body as you get older. I don’t really monitor sugar intake like I used to, but I will definitely tease her about it.

Kaiser adds, “She gets really hungry during the abs when we do core, she does an exercise at the end of a hard workout. …We like to keep coconut water in the studio so she can have something at the end of practice.
