Alan captured Klopp on camera waving in their direction. Alan told the ECHO: “We were just cycling. Usually we just come this way and back to Bootle.

“I saw the fans here this morning and thought we should wait a little while to get a glimpse. He comes along too, to catch one last glimpse of him before he leaves. I know they (the team) come here for most home games.

“We were ready to go, we were doing one last drive there and saw someone taking a picture and thought ‘there’s no way he’s there.’ Boss that. He waved at us.”

Alan supported Liverpool all his life thanks to his father, who was also a “die hard” Liverpool FC fan. Speaking of Klopp, Alan said: “I’m a bit gutted that he’s leaving, but I’m confident we’ve gotten here.”

Fans could be heard shouting and cheering as the Liverpool coach headed to Anfield this afternoon. Andre Buhr was among those who flew from Frankfurt in Germany to be in Liverpool for Klopp’s final match today.

Andre was hoping to see a match at Anfield for the first time next year to mark his 50th birthday, but said: “Jurgen told us he wanted to leave before then, so I took my chance and spent a lot of money on a flight and a February ticket for hospitality.”

Speaking about Klopp, Andre added: “He is not a normal manager, he is more of a friend – and that is what makes this group of people so special. It gives strength.” You can buy a Liverpool ECHO Klopp souvenir special here.
