‘Health did not stop him from campaigning’: ED to Delhi court over CM Kejriwal’s bail plea

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s conduct does not entitle him to bail, the Enforcement Directorate told a court in the national capital on Thursday. The CM had moved the court seeking regular bail in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise scam.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) SV Raju further said that Kejriwal’s health did not deter him from campaigning in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The court has informed the ED of Delhi CM’s plea. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja also directed the central probe agency to file its response to Kejriwal’s plea by Saturday.

The judge further sought the ED’s response to another plea by Kejriwal, who sought one week’s interim bail on medical grounds in case the regular bail plea is not allowed.

Kejriwal is currently out on bail granted by the Supreme Court till June 1. The Delhi CM had earlier approached the top court seeking an extension of his anticipatory bail by seven days to undergo a host of medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, in view of his “sudden and unexplained weight loss coupled with high ketone levels ”, which are indicative of kidney, serious heart disease and even cancer.

The chief minister, in his fresh plea filed on May 26, said he will surrender to jail authorities on June 9 instead of June 2, the scheduled date for his return to jail.

The top court had on May 10 granted a 21-day anticipatory bail to the chief minister, who was arrested in a money laundering case related to the excise ‘scam’, to enable him to campaign for the Lok Sabha -elections.

It had directed that Kejriwal would surrender on June 2, a day after the final phase of the seven-phase elections was over.
