Tinubu approves seven-month free train ride for FCT residents – Nigeria – The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

President Bola Tinubu yesterday declared a seven-month free train ride for passengers as he conducted the presidential flag-off of the commercial operation of Phase 1 of Abuja Light Rail service, also known as Abuja Metro Rail, until December.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had earlier announced two months of free train rides to ease the burden of commuting on residents of the FCT.

The President, however, appealed for an extension to provide hope to the people of the FCT so that residents could celebrate the new administration.

“Our dear landlord and his team, I heard you say: two months of free ride. I appeal to you to hold on until the end of the year. Since today, you are not going to charge me, that gives people hope and reasons to celebrate,” Tinubu said.

Recall that the contract for the project was awarded in 2007 by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and upon completion had a pilot operation from September 2018 to March 2020.

However, it encountered problems when the COVID-19 pandemic affected the pilot operation, coupled with massive vandalism of key components, resulting in the ARMT system not being operational since 2020.
